Archives for the month of: September, 2012

Many people don’t realize that tobacco is still a crop grown in Kentucky. Not nearly as prominent as in the 20th century, but still easily found and beautiful to photograph.

This is the time of year when the tobacco is starting to turn from green to a rich golden color.

The tobacco is cut and lanced on sticks to hang up for drying.

Even if you are not a tobacco user (I’m not), you can appreciate the rustic aesthetics that this crop produces. Sometimes the best photos are those of things we see everyday. More agricultural Kentuckiana to come.

These shots were all taken with a Canon Rebel on AV setting, various F-stops.

Have fun 🙂

I haven’t disappeared. I am very busy right now preparing to teach class next month. I have to work on that in my spare time, since that is not my day job. I will return shortly with more posts about my photography experiences.

This winter, look for my new blog, which is related to my day job. It will be call “Book Bag Lady” and will feature reviews of books that I have read and reblogs of others’ reviews.

Keep shooting 🙂

I will once again be teaching classes at the local community college starting on Oct. 30. I plan to offer some new material, so even if you took my classes in the spring, you should find these beneficial. Looking at others’ photos is one of the best ways to teach and learn.

I have seen  some beautiful photos on the blogs I follow, thank you to all of you for sharing. I have learned from you.

Keep shooting and have fun 🙂

One of my favorite spots in Central Kentucky is the old Weisenberger mill near Midway. The mill has been in operation since 1863. The location of the mill on Elkhorn Creek, nestled between two horse farms makes it a popular tourist attraction.

On the day I took these pictures, the sun was shining very brightly, so once again, I screwed my trusty polarizing filter on the end of my lens. I had the ISO on 400 and the F-stop set at 11 on AV setting.

This fence was made using old grinding wheels. It borders the farm across the road from the mill.

Taking your camera with you everywhere you go is a must. This trip to the mill was not planned. Had I not had my camera, I would have missed these shots.

Have fun 🙂
